Lucy Meja, from Suswa in Narok East, spent over 40 years delivering babies at home as a traditional birth attendant. During that time, she also performed Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a harmful tradition in her community.

After training with Dandelion Africa, Lucy realized the dangers of both home deliveries and FGM. She now encourages pregnant women to deliver at hospitals where skilled care is available and has stopped performing FGM.

Today, Lucy is an active advocate against FGM in her community. She educates others about its dangers, like childbirth complications and how it leads to girls dropping out of school and being forced into early marriages. Her efforts have helped protect many girls and promote safer childbirth practices.

In addition to her advocacy, Lucy and other women formed a group called Nabosho, where they practice table banking, pooling money and offering loans to each other.

With a small loan, Lucy started a bead-making business, which now provides her with steady income. Her story shows how empowering women in health and finance can bring lasting change to communities.
